Critically Thinking About Critical Thinking For Critical Thinkers

Image
When sifting through many job postings, one of the main key characteristics many employers are seeking is the ability to critically think. As soon as I see this, many questions pop into my mind. Am I a critical thinker? Why is this valued so much and how is his skill evaluated?   By definition, a critical thinker has  the skills of questioning, analyzing, and evaluating. I think I do that every day. Whenever I receive a class assignment, I think I regularly display critical thinking skills. I always question why I am being assigned this and what value will this have towards improving my skills. In addition, I also proceed to analyze every aspect of the assignment that I am given. After I finish, I always evaluate to see if I felt was worth my time.  By definition, I have practiced my critical thinking skills by just thinking about an assignment a professor has assigned me. However, I wonder if that is enough to qualify me as a critical thinke...

Over-commitment Epidemic: A Slippery Slope To Major Work Overload

Image
Over-committing is a major problem for many people, myself included.  For the majority of us, we fail in completing everything we commit to doing. The reason for this is we over-commit. How does this happen? Usually, it is because of peer pressure. We instinctively have the desire to try to please other people, taking on anything and everything that is asked of us. Because we never consider how much we have already committed to, we end up with to-do lists that are seemingly miles long.  Ultimately, we fail to do everything we committed to. I too have lost many hours of sleep because I simply didn't have the awareness to say "no" when asked to take on more responsibilities. Getting back on track again takes some self-awareness.  One method that I have started to put into practice to accomplish this comes from researchers Maxwell and Hale. It is a 5 step method that exists as follows:  Collect All Tasks - Make a list of all things that have been committed to.  Do ...

The internet seems to have everything one can ever care to know. It has everything from recipes to the latest gossip about popular celebrities. The vast knowledge the internet provides is at the fingertips to satisfy all the knowledge desires. One specific knowledge that many seem to be searching out is the medical knowledge. A lot of the younger generation have started to seek out medical advice over the internet instead of seeing doctors. With the advent of websites like WebMD and Mayo Clinic, it is very easy for some people to be tempted to just look at them to get medical advice. Why pay an expensive bill to see a doctor when resources like these can give you the answer for free? The symptoms lists and descriptions are all laid out for searchers to see and try to self diagnose. The ease of these websites to use make them seem much simpler than asking  doctor. There is also a perception that they are able to keep their ailments more private and not risk embarr...

Technology Benefit Education?

Image
Education and technology seem to be getting more and more intertwined with each quarter that passes. I can remember close to the beginning of my education journey that the most technological thing found in the classroom was the calculator. At that time many debates seemed to be occurring about its usage and how students would become less capable by relying on this crutch. Now it seems that piece of technology is now the lowest piece of tech in classrooms. These days we now have computers with capability of solving problems with such ease and speed only dreamt about a couple decades. If calculators inhibited a student's capability to be self reliant, how do student's today compare to back those pre-calculator  times ?      Calculators provided the answers in the past, now students have the whole internet at their disposal. Many websites have a sole purpose of helping students get ahead in school. These websites do ev...

Cell Phones and Our Lives

Technology seems to have become much more prominent in our daily lives. Just about everything we do in our lives is technology related. It started first with the internet and early computers. These allowed us to start connecting more readily with others around the world and expand our knowledge base. From there we got the advent of the cell phone. Initially this was the expansion of communication for convenience when away from home. As the years went by, the cell phone has gained more and more uses. Now we use it for just about everything we do in our daily lives. If we needed directions, we pull out our cell phones. If we need the latest news or sports scores, we pull out our cell phones. If we dinner, we order it on our cell phones. We even look at our cell phones for the latest happenings from our friends and relatives without even have to speak to them. This device has become as essential in our lives as the air we breathe and the food we eat. Many of the childre...
